Most phone automation is built to answer your calls. The harder problem is the reverse: getting through somebody else's phone system on your behalf — listening to a menu, pressing the right keys, waiting on hold, and staying on task until a human picks up.

This matters because the calls that waste the most time are outbound ones. Chasing an insurer, a utility, a supplier, or a clinic means ten minutes of menu and twenty minutes of hold before the thirty seconds that actually matter.

Why phone trees are hard for software

A menu sounds simple and is not.

The options are spoken, not listed. There is no structured menu to read — only audio that has to be transcribed, understood, and mapped to a keypress, often while the recording is still talking.

They change without notice. An option that was 3 last month is 4 today. Anything that hardcodes a path breaks silently.

They are not a tree. Real systems loop, time out, re-prompt, and dump you back to the root. A system that assumes forward progress gets stuck.

Hold is indistinguishable from conversation unless you are listening for it. Music, periodic recorded messages, and a human saying "thanks for holding" all have to be recognized as *not yet my turn*.

Talking to a recording wastes the call. Answering a hold announcement as though it were a person is the most common and most embarrassing failure.

Works well: confirming an appointment, checking whether something is in stock, asking a business's hours or price, getting a straightforward status update, waiting through hold to reach a department.

Works poorly: anything requiring your identity to be proven, negotiations, disputes, and calls where the other party will ask a question nobody anticipated.

Should not be attempted: calls to emergency services, and any call where being wrong causes harm.

Why this is the harder half

Answering a call is a bounded problem: the caller comes to you, states a need, and you respond. Placing one is open-ended — you are a guest in a system designed for humans, with no API, no documentation, and no guarantee the path you took last week still exists.
